The Embassy of Uruguay presents the Fundación José Gurvich, tomorrow Wednesday at 6 pm in Casa de América. Free admission until full capacity is reached.
José Gurvich (1927-1974) distinguished himself as a painter, ceramist, teacher and musician. He was a key figure in the Constructivism movement in Uruguay and occupied a central place in the Taller Torres García. After the death of the master Torres García, Gurvich assumed the role of master disciple, teaching the arts of drawing, painting and ceramics. He is recognised as one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century in Uruguay and his work is present in both public and private collections of great relevance.
In 2001, the artist’s family decided to create the Fundación José Gurvich in Uruguay, with the fundamental purpose of preserving and disseminating Gurvich’s invaluable artistic legacy. Today, this Foundation has become a cultural reference in the region, promoting research and studies on the life and work of José Gurvich, as well as on the Constructivist School of the South and its influence on contemporary artists.
The presentation ceremony will address the life and work of José Gurvich, as well as the trajectory of the entity that perpetuates his legacy, with welcoming remarks by Enrique Ojeda, director general of Casa de América, and Ana Teresa Ayala, ambassador of Uruguay.
Participating in the event will be Martín Gurvich, president of the Fundación José Gurvich and son of the artist, who will present the cultural activities of the foundation; Joaquín Ragni, vice-president of the Fundación José Gurvich, who will comment on the projects planned for the year 2024, with a special focus on the Constructive Art Association; María Eugenia Méndez, executive director of the Fundación José Gurvich. Researcher and art curator, she will present the book El Maestro y los compañeros de Gurvich en el Taller Torres García (2022) and the research Las lecciones del Maestro, and Juan Manuel Bonet, Spanish art critic, with the presentation of the book El Taller Torres García en la encrucijada del arte moderno (2023) and the research Para un atlas del arte constructivo europeo, 1942-1967.
