The Diplomat
The president of Congress, the socialist Francina Armengol, has announced that the investiture debate of the PP president, Alberto Núñez Feijó, will be held on 26 and 27 September.
This makes it possible to give the candidate the deadline he had requested for his negotiations and avoids the risk of voting at Christmas in the event of a repeat election.
The parliamentary groups in Congress will not be formally constituted until Monday, when the Bureau of the House is expected to give the go-ahead to the registrations, and then the Board of Spokespersons will have to meet to organise the debate.
Armengol’s decision moves the date for holding a hypothetical repeat general election to 14 January in the event of a deadlock.
The date of the first investiture vote is key in the event that a repeat election is necessary. If, two months after the first failed vote, the deadlock persists and no one has been invested as president, the Cortes is dissolved and elections must be held 47 days later.
