United Nations Security Council condemned, in a statement sent to The Diplomat by the Iranian Embassy in Spain, “in the strongest terms, the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack against innocent people and pilgrims at the Shah-e-Cheragh shrine in Shiraz, Iran”.
In the attack, carried out on 13 August and claimed by ISIS/Daesh, two Iranians were killed and eight other innocent people were injured.
“The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and wished a full and speedy recovery to the injured,” the statement issued by the Council’s president, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, added.
The communiqué stresses that “the members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security” and underlines the need to bring to justice “the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism”.
Finally, the Security Council urges “all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as with all other relevant authorities in this regard”.
