The Iranian Embassy in Spain, through a press release sent to The Diplomat, assures that “the European Union, despite some timid stated positions, is significantly far from fulfilling its moral responsibility to prevent this behaviour”, in reference to “the repetition of the insult and desecration against the Holy Quran in Sweden and trying to do the same in Denmark”.
The communiqué, which refers to multiple resolutions of the United Nations and other multilateral forums on human rights, states that “the relevant European countries have not fulfilled their legal and moral obligations in this field”, and calls for “an effective response to this issue”, recalling that the Islamic Republic’s position “has already been explained to the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union”.
The Iranian diplomatic representation in Spain, after condemning “in the strongest terms the continuation of this behaviour”, suggests that the repetition of similar events “would mean confirming double standards in the field of human rights” and would demonstrate “that a will in Europe is determined to blatantly insult the highest values of two billion Muslims, including the Islamic communities in European countries, and thus to spread hatred”.
The press release underlines that “the perpetrators of this cultural crime not only do not value legal regulations in Europe, but also do not pay attention to the validity of conventions and UN resolutions”.
