The Diplomat
Last Tuesday, the Romanian Embassy organised at the Real Casino de Madrid, with the support of the Instituto Cultural Rumano of Madrid and in the presence of a large audience, a concert by the string sextet Romanian Chamber Orchestra, entitled Music that moves Europe and celebrates alliances.
With this concert, “the Embassy celebrated the friendship and cooperation of two brotherly peoples, Romania and Spain, who ten years ago decided to further strengthen their millennial ties through a strategic partnership”; they also celebrated “Europe, a space of common values, our home and also Timisoara, a symbolic city for Romania which this year holds the title of European Capital of Culture and which has prepared many cultural events thus launching an invitation to step on its threshold and enjoy its charm”.
The Romanian Ambassador, George Bologan, conveyed a message of unity and tolerance: “Music, he said, is the best way to celebrate our friendship, it is a magic that succeeds in sowing the seeds of kindness and tolerance in our hearts, keeping them away from hatred and intolerance”.
Each of the six members of the Romanian Chamber Orchestra plays in some of the most valuable orchestras in Europe and they gather annually under the baton of conductor Cristian Macelaru, becoming true ambassadors of Romanian culture. Violinists Liviu Morna and Cristina Alecu play in Barcelona and Castilla y León, respectively; violinists Cristian Andrieș and Mihai Cocea are members of orchestras in Switzerland and Brussels, while cellists Dragoș Bălan and Gabriel Faur come from orchestras in Madrid and Vienna. Each and every one of them conveyed during the concert, according to the Romanian Embassy’s note, “the joy of living in harmony, awakening in each of us deep feelings of friendship and communion, but also the example of how the members of the Romanian community understand the meaning of European identity and diversity”.
