A delegation from the Saeima, the Latvian Parliament, paid a visit to Spain this week, during which it thanked Spain for its support in guaranteeing security in the Baltic following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The delegation, which was led by the president of the Saeima, Edvards Smiltens, was received last Friday by the president of the Congress of Deputies, Maritxel Batet, who was accompanied by several parliamentarians, including the president of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Pau Marí-Klose.
Batet said on her Twitter account that “European unity is our greatest strength to confront the war in Ukraine and guarantee effective support for the Ukrainian people”.
The Latvian parliamentarians were also received in the Senate by the Vice-President of the Upper House, Cristina Narbona.
One of the members of the Latvian Parliament’s delegation, Rihard Kols, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said via Twitter that during the Spanish EU Presidency, the Russian invasion of Ukraine will continue to be an important factor.
He added that, in the contacts held, the option of handing over to Ukraine the confiscated assets of the sanctioned entities for its resistance and reconstruction efforts was discussed, as well as the inclusion of the Wagner group on the EU’s list of terrorists, with all the consequences that this would entail.
“Spain,” Kols noted, “is the second largest contributor to NATO’s extended presence battle group in Latvia, and also patrols Baltic airspace. It’s a fantastic example of unity and solidarity among allies, and we are incredibly grateful.
