The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communiqué yesterday congratulating the new president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, who won the elections held last Sunday in that country.
Peña, who was more than 15 points ahead of his nearest rival, the opposition Efraín Alegre, will take over from Mario Abdó on 15 August, thus keeping the Colorado Party in power.
In the Foreign Ministry’s communiqué, the Spanish government conveys its best wishes to Santiago Peña for the new political stage that is opening up in the country and extends its congratulations to the candidates elected in the elections for deputies, senators, governors and departmental councils held simultaneously. It also congratulates the Paraguayan people as a whole “for their civic spirit and the peaceful manner in which the elections were held”.
Finally, after pointing out that the government wishes to continue to maintain a close relationship with the Paraguayan government and “deepen its bilateral agenda”, it expressed its willingness to “work together in the Ibero-American and multilateral sphere with the new government, in particular as a partner for the sustainable development of the country”.
