The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, and his predecessor, Sir Peter Caruana, yesterday inaugurated the Kingsway Tunnel, which has become the only regular vehicular access point from Gibraltar into Spain and, therefore, into the rest of Europe.
The construction of the Kingsway Tunnel, which incorporates the road and tunnels that run from Devil’s Tower Road to the Eastgate roundabout, was commissioned during Caruana’s term of office. As of this past early morning, Kingsway is the only regular access point for all cars and motorcycles (including commercial vehicles) to the frontier, Gibraltar International Airport, Western Beach and other points.
“It’s been a real pleasure to have the opportunity at last to open the Gibraltar Airport Tunnel,” said Fabian Picardo at the event. “Kingsway will stand as a testamentto the collective Gibraltarian spirit and resolve in ensuring the betterment today of the Gibraltar of tomorrow,” he added.
For his part, Caruana said that “in Gibraltar we have to do things because we’re very small and we need people to have an impression of us”. “So, what people see when they visit Gibraltar, influences how they come to think of Gibraltar. And on the back of that, whether it’s the sort of place they want to invest in and be in and the more prosperous Gibraltar looks, the less likely the others in other countries are likely to take the view that it’s viable that our political futures might be dealt in this way or that way as opposed to our way,” he concluded, in a veiled allusion to Spain.
