On 24 March at 8 p.m., the Instituto Internacional of Madrid (Calle Miguel Ángel, 8) presents pianist Fabio Álvarez in concert, performing works by Philip Glass, one of the most important American composers of the last 50 years.
This concert is part of the series of concerts, courses and events that the Institute is organising on minimalist music and American culture at the end of the last century. Throughout the winter and early spring there is a programme inspired by this spring’s Teatro Real production, John Adams’ opera Nixon in China.
In New York it is impossible, almost inevitable, not to get caught up in the music of Philip Glass. His operas play at the Metropolitan Opera, his portrait painted by Chuck Close is on the 86th Street underground, and that sense of Mad Rush can be felt all over the city. This project was born influenced by the musical moment and the circumstances of the performer, Fabio Álvarez, after having lived in the Big Apple for 7 years.
The concert programme includes themes such as Mad Rush, Etudes 2, 6, 5 and 9, Witchita Vortex Sutra, Trilogy Sonata, Knee Play No. 4 from Einstein on the Beach, Act 3, Conclusion from Satyagraha, Dance from Act 2 of Akhnaten or Knee Play 5 from Einstein on the Beach.
Free admission for children under 13. Tickets are not numbered. The venue will open 30 minutes before the start of the concert. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
