The Iranian Ambassador to Spain, Hassan Ghashghavi, regretted, during the reception he gave to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, that “due to sanctions and pressure from the United States” Spanish-Iranian economic relations have fallen “to less than 500 million euros” a year.

The head of the Iranian Mission pointed out, however, that “the companies of both countries continue to work to expand these relations with deep mutual trust“, with the aim of recovering the level of exchanges “which in not so distant years reached the figure of five billion euros”.

Ghashghavi said that “political talks and consultations between the two foreign ministers and other authorities of the two countries are also continuing” while “special attention is being paid to the cultural sphere, deepening academic, tourist, artistic and sports relations”.

“We hope that after the removal of obstacles and influences, most of which are beyond the control of the two countries,” he said, “we can lay the foundations for further progress in deepening bilateral relations between Iran and Spain, as befits the children of two great civilisations, that of the Iberian Peninsula and that of Persia”.

Regarding the anniversary of the revolution, the ambassador said that “the slogan of independence is the main source of our foreign policy, which is based on emphasising national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and paying serious attention to the establishment of peace and tranquillity in the world”. Therefore, he added that “as stated in the UN Charter, hegemonic powers cannot intervene and leave negative impacts on the destiny of other countries and nations“.
