The spokesman for Unidas Podemos in the Congress of Deputies, Pablo Echenique, yesterday described as “reprehensible” the manoeuvre of the former Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, in attempting to dissolve Congress and decree a government of exception. Echenique defended, given the current situation in the Andean country, the calling of new elections as soon as possible.
The spokesman for Unidas Podemos claimed that the former president, who has been arrested for breaking the constitutional order for an alleged crime of rebellion, had been moving away from the left and had ceased to represent his voters, with a drift that brought him closer to “ultra-right” positions.
This is what he said during a press appearance to explain the joint amendments with the PSOE on the reform to repeal the crime of sedition, questioned by the situation in Peru and the assessment of Castillo’s behaviour, given that in the past Podemos supported his candidacy in the last elections.
In this way, Echenique rejected the former president’s actions, asserting that he had long since distanced himself from the Peruvian and international left, as illustrated by the progressive parties’ progressive loss of support.
“Mr. Castillo failed representing left-wing voters and allies, and we have seen this over time,” the purple leader emphasised, asserting that the former president has been leaning towards far-right positions. And in this sense, he recalled that he had even photographed himself with the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro.
