The theatre of the Instituto Francés in Madrid is organising this evening at 19:00 the meeting Paris, Flaubert and the Scrivener between Marie-Madeleine Rigopoulos and the Nobel Prize winner for Literature and recently appointed member of the prestigious French Academy (Académie française), Mario Vargas Llosa, in which the influence of French literature and in particular that of the 19th century and the figure of Flaubert, on his work, will be discussed.
Marie-Madeleine Rigopoulos is a Franco-Greek literary journalist and artistic director of the Paris Book Festival since September 2021. A former literary columnist for Europe 1 and France Inter, she was also general curator of the Livre sur la Place festival in Nancy from 2019 to 2021.
Mario Vargas Llosa’s work translated into French is abundant. His latest work, Tiempos recios (ed Alfaguara) was published last year in France (ed Gallimard, translated by Albert Bensoussan). Mario Vargas Llosa was the first foreign writer to enter the prestigious La Pléiade collection in 2016, a symbol of the close relationship he maintains with French literature. It was reading Flaubert that sparked his desire to become a writer. His talent as a writer made him one of the figures who revealed Latin American literature to the world in the 1960s.
