The Council of Ministers yesterday authorized a voluntary contribution by Spain of five million euros to the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP).
GAFSP was born in 2010 as one of the G-20 global initiatives in the field of food security. Driven primarily by the United States, Canada, Spain (which, with $94.2 million, is the seventh largest donor in cumulative terms) and the Gates Foundation, GAFSP aims to improve food security, nutrition and agrifood incomes of the most disadvantaged populations in the least developed countries.
GAFSP operates as a Global Fund, administered by the World Bank. The program works with public and private sector actors, civil society organizations and United Nations Agencies and Regional Development Banks, which oversee the projects. Over the years, GAFSP has channeled more than $1.7 billion against hunger, malnutrition and poverty in more than 40 low-income countries.
On June 27, 2020, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced, during the Global Goal: Unite for our Future event, Spain’s commitment to contribute ten million euros to GAFSP in two payments of five million euros, the first in 2021 and the second in 2022. In addition, in the current context of food insecurity caused by the pandemic, climate crises and, above all, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, several neighboring countries have announced new contributions to GAFSP in recent months.
