Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian on Friday criticised the “self-serving” stance of some European countries on the protests in Iran in recent weeks during a telephone conversation with his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares.
According to the Iranian state television channel Press TV, Hosein Amirabdolahian, in the conversation with the Spanish minister, lamented that there are countries that “act in a self-interested manner instead of defending the national interest of their countries, reports Europa Press.
He described as “not very constructive” the position of some Western countries with regard to the protests and “terrorist attacks” perpetrated in Iran.
In contrast, Amirabdolahian welcomed Spain’s condemnation of the recent attack on 26 October against the Shah Cheragh mosque in the city of Shiraz, which left fifteen people dead and dozens injured.
The head of Iranian diplomacy also referred to the negotiations to try to recover the 2015 nuclear agreement. “We always want to talk to Europe despite the fact that three countries such as Germany, France and the UK have not been able to implement the nuclear agreement since 2018,” he reproached.
“It is an international obligation after the imposition of sanctions by (former US president Donald) Trump’s administration,” Amirabdolahian said.
Iran’s Press TV reported that both ministers highlighted the “historic” relations between the two countries, and noted that Amirabdolahian called for the expansion of relations between Tehran and Madrid, while Albares stressed the need to promote dialogue.
