The Romanian Ambassador to Spain, George Bologan, has presented the Mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Javier Rodríguez Palacios, with the National Order of Merit in the rank of officer in recognition of the trust placed in the community of 14,000 Romanians living in the city.
The distinction was awarded to him by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, as a token of his appreciation for his work in favour of promoting Romanian-Spanish relations.
In his speech, the ambassador highlighted the special contribution of the Mayor of Alcalá de Henares for the trust he has placed in the Romanian community and underlined that in the coming period the acts of diplomacy which have become a tradition and which aim at human and institutional rapprochement will continue.
Also, taking advantage of his presence in Alcalá de Henares, George Bologan encouraged his compatriots living in the city to get involved in the life of the society, to contribute to its vigour, to take an interest in political life, while supporting the economic and social vitality and making the voice of the community increasingly heard at the local level.
For his part, the Mayor of Alcalá de Henares underlined the close ties between Spain and Romania, both historical and cultural, and valued the active role that local Romanian citizens play in the development of society, contributing to the growth of the local community.
