The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, held a meeting yesterday at the Palacio de Viana with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.
This is the fourth meeting that the minister has held with the personal envoy since his appointment in October 2021. In this meeting, according to the Ministry, Albares conveyed to him “the support expressed by President Pedro Sanchez from the podium of the General Assembly of the United Nations, on September 22 in New York”.
Likewise, the minister reiterated to the personal envoy the importance of the work he is carrying out and assured that Spain will continue to make available to him any resource in its power to facilitate it.
On September 23, Pedro Sanchez reiterated before the UN General Assembly Spain’s support for a “mutually acceptable political solution, within the framework of the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolutions” to the Western Sahara conflict, without mentioning his unexpected decision to recognize the validity of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. “In that sense, the work of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations seems to me fundamental, and I want to say that he has the full support of the Government of Spain”, he added.
