The Council of Ministers yesterday appointed Alicia Rocío Varela Donoso as the new Director General for International Trade and Investment at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, replacing María Paz Pérez Resa, who was dismissed last week.
Varela holds a degree in Economics and Business Studies and has been a member of the Higher Corps of Commercial Technicians and State Economists since 1992.
The new director general of Trade and Investment has been economic and commercial counsellor at the Spanish embassies in Lagos (1999-2004), Cairo (2008-2013) and Moscow (2016-2022).
Throughout her career, she has also been deputy director general of Economic and Commercial Offices Abroad and of the Territorial Trade Network (2013-2016) and of European Financial Institutions -EIFs- (2006-2008).
Varela was Deputy Assistant Director General of IFEs (2004-2006) and held various positions in the Deputy Directorate General for Trade Policy with Latin American, African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (1995-1999). She was also an advisor in the Agri-Food Products Promotion Division of ICEX (1992-1995).
