The Diplomat
Daniel Ortega’s regime has withdrawn the already-granted diplomatic clearance of US diplomat Hugo Rodriguez, whom the government of President Joe Biden had appointed as the new ambassador to Managua.
The Nicaraguan Embassy in Spain sent to The Diplomat the letter from Foreign Minister Denis Moncada to Secretary of State Antony Blinken informing him of the decision.
In it, the Nicaraguan foreign minister states that Rodríguez “made disrespectful and interfering statements against our country, disregarding the principles of international law, the United Nations Charter and the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations”.
Moncada adds that “the Ambassador or postulant for Ambassador, Hugo Rodríguez, cannot get involved in national issues that are proper to Nicaraguans and much less disrespect, offend, humiliate, threaten, play a leading role, or be a factor of interference or interventionism in the internal affairs of the country”.
The withdrawal of the plácet followed Rodríguez’s confirmation hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in which he pledged “to work with Congress, interagency colleagues and international partners to press for a return to democracy, respect for human rights and the release of political prisoners in Nicaragua”.
