Until 4 September, the Teatro Bellas Artes in Madrid (Calle Marqués de Casa Riera, 2) presents the play Palabras encadenadas (Chained Words), written by Jordi Galceran, directed by Domingo Cruz and performed by David Gutiérrez and Beatriz Rico.
Palabras encadenadas is, if you want to read it like that, the story of a psychopath and his crime(s), have they really existed, have they been “rehearsals” for the only crime he wanted to perpetrate, are they just part of a macabre joke? But it also reveals the impossibility of drawing boundaries between madness and sanity, between executioner and victim. Step by step, the story becomes more complex and the emergence of each new truth is followed by a questioning, so that a new uncertainty is generated. What could have been a simple moral proposition, as exciting as it might be, but weighed down by a clear taking of sides, which would have prevented us from sympathising directly with the victim and feeling disgust for the executioner, is turned into an ambiguous questioning of the human condition, thanks to a skilful concealment, which is nothing more than the demonstration that being a torturer and not tortured only depends on having the power to choose the role and having the necessary resources to play it successfully.
