The secretary general of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI), Mariano Jabonero, participated this week in the Transforming Education pre-summit, held at Unesco headquarters in Paris.
Jabonero participated in this event as representative of Latin America and the Caribbean in the High Level Steering Committee of Unesco’s SDG-4. The objective of the meeting was to prepare for the summit to be held in September in New York, within the United Nations General Assembly, with a view to achieving the real involvement of world leaders to achieve the transformation of education and recover the learning losses related to the pandemic.
During these pre-summit days, representatives of the organizations that make up the High-Level Steering Committee of SDG-4 (Quality Education for All), of which the IEO is the representative of the Latin America and Caribbean region, had the opportunity to share an urgent call to action addressed to heads of state and government to invest more in education, with a view to meeting this important goal of the 2030 Agenda.
The document urges world leaders to “take strong action in order to invest in and transform education, considering it the most appropriate way to achieve our common goals of peace, prosperity and sustainability.” “Investing in education is vital and urgent,” the communiqué warns.
