Casa Árabe will be presenting the duo Vasilis Kostas (Greek oud) and Layth Sidiq (violin) in its garden on Saturday 2 July at 9:30 p.m., in a concert in which they will be performing their latest album, Steps. Free admission until full capacity is reached.
Steps unites the musical universes of the Greek and Arabic traditions with contemporary improvisation. The repertoire consists of original compositions that explore the musical bridges between these two cultures and expand the possibilities of what a duo is capable of. From the Tigris River to the mountains of Epirus (Greece), the duo aims to experiment with new structures and challenge the boundaries of music by recreating the repertoire in a specific moment for the audience to enjoy.
With a fusion of different sounds and techniques, the duo has toured the world over the past six years, performing in renowned concert halls and academic institutions such as WOMEX, the ADEM festival, Tufts University, Berklee College of Music, the Montreal Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. This album aims to inspire similar collaborations centred on friendship, respect and the philosophy of improvised exploration to take tradition into new territories.
