Next Wednesday, in the Clara Campoamor Hall of the Congress of Deputies (access via Carrera de San Jerónimo, 36), at 6pm, Fundación Alternativas presents the Report on democracy in Spain: the country in front of the mirror.
This new edition analyses the main issues that reflect the democratic reality of Spain in 2021, the year in which the country gradually began to leave the worst of the pandemic behind and to enter the historic challenge of reconstruction. The report returns for another year to the Congress of Deputies, where its president Mertixell Batet (pictured) will welcome the event.
The pandemic has exposed the strengths and weaknesses of political systems around the world. Across the globe, a certain democratic decline continues to be observed, not so much in the form of a regression towards traditional dictatorships as in the fact that more democracies are losing quality than are making progress. In this context, the case of Spain is not one of sustained or, far from it, accelerated democratic decline; on the contrary, all recent indicators, including the survey of experts conducted each year by the Fundación Alternativas for this report, point to a recovery in the quality of democracy to pre-Great Recession levels, although some important problems persist.
Mertixell Batet will be joined by Jesús Ruiz-Huerta, director of the Fundación Alternativas Laboratory, and Yolanda Gómez, director of the Centre for Political and Constitutional Studies (CEPC). The report will be presented by Amuitz Garmendia, professor at UC3M and co-director of the report, and Alberto Penadés, professor at the University of Salamanca and co-director of the report. This will be followed by a round table discussion with the participation of Sandra León, director of the Carlos III-Juan March Institute and trustee of the Fundación Alternativas; Dulce Manzano, lecturer at UCM and member of the IDE Advisory Board; Amuitz Garmendia, lecturer at UC3M and co-director of the Report, and Alberto Penadés, lecturer at the University of Salamanca and co-director of the Report.
