The taboo of homosexuality and football is the central theme of the documentary Footballeur et homo : au cœur du tabou (Footballer and homo, at the heart of the taboo) by Yoann Lemaire and Michel Royer, which will be screened next Monday 27 June at 8pm at the Instituto Francés in Madrid. The event will be attended by Yoann Lemaire, professional footballer and homosexual.
As part of the cultural season French Scenes: together, creative European, in connection with France’s presidency of the European Union, the Instituto Francés of Spain wishes, during Pride month, to highlight a reflection on the question of homosexuality in high-level sport in general, and in professional football in particular. A liberation of the word rarely seen in the media that allows the LGTBQI+ cause to advance and discrimination in sport to recede.
Yoann Lemaire knows homophobia in the world of sport well. As a football player since childhood, he has experienced first-hand the prejudice and aggression in the world. In recent years, however, he has noticed a change in mentality, to which he has done his bit. For the past two years, with his association Foot Ensemble, he has been on a “crusade” against homophobia in the amateur and professional media. With his simple and direct style, and his curious label of ‘the only gay player’, Yoann goes to meet different interlocutors: amateur players as well as international stars, referees, journalists, sociologists or club managers.
