Spain presented yesterday in Paris the candidacy of Malaga for the 2027 International Exposition, which is dedicated to The urban era towards the sustainable city and will compete with four other candidatures.
The candidacy dossier was presented at the headquarters of the International Exhibitions Bureau (Bureau International des Expositions, BIE) by the ambassador in Special Mission for the Expo Malaga 2027 Candidacy, Juan José Escobar; the representative of Spain in the BIE and economic and commercial counselor of the Embassy of Spain in Paris, Javier Burgos; and the general director for the Expo 2027 in Malaga of the City Council of Malaga, Jerónimo Blasco.
Malaga will compete with the candidacies of Minnesota (USA), Phuket (Thailand), Belgrade (Serbia) and Bariloche (Argentina), which were also presented yesterday. The vote for the venue of Expo 27, in which all 170 BIE member states will participate, could be held in the last quarter of 2022.
The urban era: towards the sustainable city would be held in Malaga from June 5 to September 5, 2027. The theme of the candidacy affects “all countries regardless of their level of development”, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release, in which he recalled that “in the barely two decades that would separate this Expo from the one held in Shanghai in 2010 dedicated to the future of cities, the world population will increase by 1,600 million inhabitants who will mostly settle in cities”. “In other words, by 2050, more than three quarters of the world’s population will be living in cities and it is necessary to reflect on how to make population growth and sustainability compatible,” it added.
The dossier will be presented publicly at an event organized by the administrations promoting the candidacy: Malaga City Council, the Government of Spain, the Andalusian Regional Government and the Provincial Council. Junta de Andalucía and Diputación Provincial. Information on the project, on which work began in 2019, is available on the website https://expo2027.malaga.eu/es/ and official social networks.
