The Teatro de la Zarzuela premieres tonight at 8pm and until 22nd May the comic opera Don Gil de Alcalá, by composer Manuel Penella, with an elegant and amusing version by stage director Emilio Sagi and musical direction by Lucas Macías.
Penella’s ‘Don Gil de Alcalá’ is a work very close to the luminosity and liveliness of Italian opera, but with a Hispanic treatment. The stage director highlights its “extreme beauty”, tenderness and high doses of nostalgia. On this occasion, he relies on the splendid work of some of his closest collaborators, such as Daniel Bianco for the set design, the much-remembered costume designer Pepa Ojanguren for the costumes, Eduardo Bravo for the lighting and Nuria Castejón for the choreography.
And as usual at the Teatro, there will be two casts who, together with the Coro Titular del Teatro de la Zarzuela conducted by maestro Antonio Fauró, will bring to the stage this plot which, in Emilio Sagi’s words, mixes a romantic love story, “cheesy and almost soap-opera-like”, with the “hilarious humorous imbroglio it ends up becoming in the style of Rossini’s comic operas”.
