Although it is true that the protagonist is often confused with the author, this is not an autobiography. If anything, it is the autobiography of Carlos, the protagonist.
There is enough fantasy in the story. Reality, however, surpasses fiction on numerous occasions, approaching the grotesque, especially in the more exotic countries through which the story takes place. But, as the introduction points out, it is a divertimento, albeit a very varied one, and not without verisimilitude.
