Webinar at Casa Asia ‘The war in Ukraine: what role can Asia play?’

Casa Asia and the Real Instituto Elcano present this afternoon at 6 p.m. online the webinar entitled The war in Ukraine: what role can Asia play?

The invasion of Ukraine by its neighbour Russia has aroused strong condemnation from world public opinion and the vast majority of states, as demonstrated by the vote of the United Nations General Assembly, which overwhelmingly voted that the Russian government should immediately stop the aggression and withdraw its troops, as well as abide by the rules of the United Nations Charter.

These protests and condemnations have of course included Asia, where the events of recent weeks are being watched with great concern.  But no doubt the reaction in Asia also has much to do with complex calculations ranging from how US allies and partners in the region are responding to Beijing’s possible intentions and how they might be changing with respect to Taiwan, and where China has refused to call the assault on Ukraine an invasion, to how it has influenced foreign policy in India, which has had to walk a diplomatic tightrope over Ukraine in recent days while trying to balance its ties with Moscow and the West.

The round table will be moderated by Rafael Bueno, Director of Politics, Society and Educational Programmes, Casa Asia, and will include Carlota García Encina, Senior Researcher in the United States and Transatlantic Relations at the Real Instituto Elcano, and Professor of International Relations; Mario Esteban, Senior Researcher at the Elcano Royal Institute and Senior Lecturer at the Centre for East Asian Studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid; Ana Ballesteros, Senior Research Associate at CIDOB and at the Political and Electoral Observatory of the Arab and Muslim World (OPEMAM); Francisco Olmos, Research Fellow at the Foreign Policy Centre in London, where he conducts research on the Central Asian republics; and Emilio de Miguel, Ambassador-at-Large for the Indo-Pacific and Director of the Casa Asia-Madrid Centre.
