Ambassador José María Liu, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain, yesterday expressed his satisfaction at the participation of two Taiwanese artists for the first time at the ART MADRID fair and Hybrid Art Fair, during Madrid Art Week until 27 February.
José María Liu told The Diplomat that “art is a soft power, which serves to get to know each other more and better through works such as those of these two young artists. According to the Taiwanese representative, “cultural, touristic and educational exchange is one of our most important works”.
During this Taiwan Art Week, visitors to ART MADRID and Hybrid Art Fair will be able to get to know the works of two Taiwanese artists with very different styles: the poetic concept of Wang Yu-song’s video art and the imaginary world of Chang Teng-yuan, who has a very particular take on the great classics of painting, including Goya’s ‘The 3rd of May Firing Squad’ and Diego Velázquez’s ‘Las Meninas’.
For his part, Wang Yu-song will exhibit his video art project ‘Hualien White Lighthouse’, a poetic and timeless vision of what the place where an old lighthouse, now destroyed, was located in the port of Hualien suggests to this young creator.

Orton Huang, artistic director of Yiri Arts, said: “This is the seventh time Yiri has participated in the art fair held in Madrid. We take this opportunity to showcase the diverse and vibrant creative energy of Taiwanese art”.
Yiri Arts is one of the galleries in Taiwan that often participates in international art fairs. Since 2014, it has used the Everyday Art Museum as a model to pursue the dream of “making art enter and enrich people’s lives”.

With the participation for the first time in two major art fairs during the Taiwan Art Week in Madrid 2022, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain has launched a special printing of limited edition promotional bags. The main image of the bags is Chang Teng-yuan’s painting ‘Social Media’. According to those responsible, the idea is not only to pay homage to Goya’s ‘The Firing Squad’, but also to draw attention to the link between the proposal and Spain’s artistic legacy, “which the Taiwanese value highly”, as Ambassador Liu stated.
The public will be able to view works by Taiwanese artists and obtain limited bags in the exhibition area on presentation of admission tickets for the two fairs.
