Until 15 May, the Museo Nacional Thyssen Bornemisza is presenting Memorias mestizas (Mestizo Memories), an exhibition by the Afro-Andalusian artist Carla Hayes Mayoral (Málaga, 1997), who questions the viewer about the colonial past of Spain and Europe from an identity-based enquiry.
Using a combination of raffia, a material so characteristic of African culture, and visual references from the collective Western imaginary, Hayes Mayoral deploys a mixed-race, neo-baroque installation that subverts the notion of the space of power. The theatricality and astonishment at the wonder of its apparently aestheticist execution induce the deconstruction of the hegemonic narrative. This exhibition is the fifth installment of the Kora programme, which each year presents an exhibition conceived from a gender perspective at the museum.
