The Nicaraguan Public Ministry, according to a communiqué sent by the Nicaraguan Embassy in Spain, informed last February 12 “the Nicaraguan population of the death of Jorge Hugo Torres Jimenez due to illness”.
The communiqué states that the dissident, “from the moment he presented deterioration in his state of health, was transferred to a hospital in the capital to be adequately treated, where he was always accompanied by his children Hugo Marcel and María Alejandra, as well as by his son-in-law, Alejandro Ernesto Martínez, however, he passed away due to the ailments he was suffering from”.
According to the information provided by the Nicaraguan Mission in Spain, “the Public Prosecutor’s Office, upon learning of the seriousness of the illness, for humanitarian reasons, asked the judicial authority for the definitive suspension of the beginning of the oral and public trial, which was authorized by the judicial authority”.
On the 15th, the Spanish government lamented the death of Hugo Torres and once again demanded that Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega release all political prisoners.
In a message on his Twitter account, the secretary of state for Ibero-America, Juan Fernández-Trigo, said: “We deeply regret the death of the political prisoner Hugo Torres, arbitrarily detained, imprisoned in inhumane conditions and tried without guarantees”.
