The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain and the Centro Sefarad-Israel, in collaboration with the Spanish Senate, are organising for the eleventh consecutive year, at the Senate’s headquarters, the State Event for the Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity, designated for 27 January by the United Nations General Assembly.
In Spain, the commemoration of this day was established in the Council of Ministers held on 10 December 2004. On this date in 1945, Soviet troops liberated the largest extermination camp of the Nazi regime: Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Seating will be limited and the event will be broadcast through the channels of the organising organisations. Ander Gil, President of the Senate; Pilar Llop, Minister of Justice; Isaac Benzaquén, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain; Concepción Díaz Berzosa, Vice-President of Amical Mauthausen and other camps; Diego Luis Fernández, Director of the Institute of Gypsy Culture, and Miguel de Lucas, Director General of Centro Sefarad-Israel, will take part in the event.
Between the speeches, there will be musical interludes and 6 candles will be lit in memory of the victims, the survivors, their rescuers and for the commitment to Memory.
