The diplomat Teresa Orjales has been appointed new deputy director general for EU countries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sources at the Department told The Diplomat.
Teresa Orjales will fill the vacancy left by Miguel Alonso Berrio, who was appointed head of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for the EU, Pascual Navarro.
She will report directly to the Director General for Western, Central and Southeast Europe, Raquel Gómez-Cambronero, and will be responsible for Spain’s bilateral relations with EU countries.
The new deputy director general was until August last year Spain’s ambassador to Estonia, having already been until her appointment, between 2016 and 2017, as an advisory member of the same Directorate General for Europe.
She was also posted to the Spanish Embassies in Helsinki and Ankara and to the Permanent Representation to NATO in Brussels. She has also been deputy director general of Foreign Communication and between 2012 and 2016 she was head of the Cabinet of the President of the Congress of Deputies, who was then Jesús Posada.
