The Official State Gazette (BOE) yesterday published the creation of the Organising Committee for the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, which will take place in the second half of 2023.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, will head the Committee, which will be supported by the Coordination Office for the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, created at the end of October last year and headed by Aurora Mejía.
The Organising Committee, which has already been established on the other occasions on which Spain has held the rotating Presidency of the EU, will have as its objectives “the programming, planning, coordination and execution of the activities of the public administrations, institutions and bodies” during the aforementioned six-month period.
In addition to Albares, the Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government, Óscar López, and the Secretaries of State for the European Union, Communication, Budgets and Expenditure, and Security will also form part of the Committee’s Plenary.
The heads of the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union; the Deputy Permanent Representation to the EU; the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Government; the Under-Secretariats of all ministerial departments; the General Secretariat for the European Union; and the Coordination Office for the Spanish Presidency will also form part of the Committee.
As for the financial resources that this body will have at its disposal to carry out its functions, the BOE clarifies that the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration will make “the necessary budgetary modifications to provide the appropriate appropriations” for this purpose.
