10 December 2021 will go down in history as the date on which Nicaragua and China began a new stage of collaboration that will undoubtedly allow the development of trade and strategic investments based on ties of friendship between the two countries. Managua thus broke off the official relations and ties it had maintained with Taiwan for 30 years, which were promoted by former President Violeta Barrios, and, like almost the entire international community, began to recognise the People’s Republic of China and its only legitimate government, which represents the whole of China.
According to the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada, after a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, this agreement will allow for global development in all areas of the political, economic, social and cultural spheres. The foreign minister specifically mentioned: “science, technology, education, health, art, culture, sports, media, communications and information technology, investment, projects, trade, defence, security, and everything that promotes understanding, comprehension, and new and greater levels of fraternal coordination”.
Sometimes you can tell if you have made the right decision by looking at what your enemies think. And here we have a clear example: not a day has it taken the US State Department to reject Nicaragua’s decision (as if they had any legitimacy in the international relations of third countries!) and to highlight or try to justify Taiwan’s role with its partners in the Western hemisphere and on the world stage.
But whatever the Empire may say, the reality is unquestionable: under President Xi Jinping of the Communist Party, China has, in recent years, exponentially increased its global influence and the development of its reach in the areas of trade, investment and cooperation. And the latter is important, cooperation as opposed to capitalist business, which is the sole objective of the imperialist economic model. The agreement established between the two nations we are talking about is based on relations of “mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, the dignity and territorial integrity of the states, their right to development and to have social security systems, seeking to address the concerns of each of the states and persisting in the resolution of disputes by peaceful means”. The agreement also rejects “the threat or use of force as a means of conflict resolution, as well as unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law and the UN Charter that undermine the sovereignty, stability and self-determination of peoples”. And very importantly, it rejects “interference in internal affairs under the pretext of ethnic minority issues”. In other words, cooperation, respect, sovereignty, freedom, dignity… words that are not in the imperialist dictionary, in other words, development YES, but not at any price.
The resumption of historical ties, of relations at all levels, between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Nicaragua is good news for the interests of the peoples, which also corresponds to the will of the peoples themselves and is an act of responsibility by the governments led by Xi Jinping and Commander Daniel Ortega and comrade Rosario Murillo. So much so, that within this framework of re-establishing political relations, it also includes those corresponding to the parties, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and the Chinese Communist Party, and therefore, of both Revolutions, as expressed by the Nicaraguan Vice President, Rosario Murillo, who recently mentioned the following words: “this week alone how many advances, how many victories, this restitution of relations between transcendent revolutions such as the people’s revolution and the Chinese Communist Party and the Sandinista Revolution and the Sandinista Front and now already the governments of the People’s Republic of China and Nicaragua, this is historic”.
We cannot ignore the fact that these are complex times for Nicaragua, which legitimately and sovereignly decided on 7 November not to renounce its socialist and revolutionary ideals and which overwhelmingly supported the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN); These elections have unleashed an international campaign of media and political aggression, threats and sanctions, which is why this agreement will also serve to strengthen international relations based “on respect, equity, justice and mutually beneficial cooperation” in order to jointly form “a new international order that is fairer and more equitable”.
In the context of economic globalisation, imperialist aggression, the imposition of the single political and social model… this re-establishment of diplomatic relations is a beacon of hope. In a few years’ time, we will say “what a beautiful Christmas on 10 December”.
