The Diplomat
To commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Gender Equality Section of the Embassy of the Dominican Republic organised a round table discussion on the theme Living without Violence is Possible.
The event brought together local authorities, the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Spain, as well as the Dominican community residing in this country, students, artists, members of the Association of Men for Gender Equality of Spain (AHIGE), Spanish professors and academics and a select audience committed to institutions that promote actions and promote fundamental changes to radically transform situations of discrimination, exclusion and violence against women.
In his speech, the Dominican ambassador, Juan Bolívar Díaz, said that the Dominican State is committed to implementing public policies to eradicate violence against women, hence the above slogan, of which he is the flag bearer. The speakers expressed that gender violence is a social and health problem that affects the whole of society, not only the female population that suffers it.
The day consisted of two parts. In the morning, at the University of Nebrija, the round table was held and at 6 p.m. a cultural event was held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, which began with the reading of the poem Minerva Mirabal, in the first person, followed by the screening of the documentary: Nombre secreto: Mariposas, by the Chilean filmmaker Cecilia Domeyko. The event included the participation of singers Angie Del Riego, Lisbel Francisco and Claudia Sánchez Vizcaíno. After these performances, the attendees enjoyed the paintings of the artist Angie Del Riego, inspired by the Mirabal Sisters, and a cocktail that allowed the exchange among the attendees. At the end of the day, the participants were left with a vision of the instruments available to the country to prevent violence and the patterns inherited over many years that cannot be changed immediately, but which must be worked on continuously.
