The Diplomat
The former under-secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Celsa Nuño, was appointed yesterday by the Council of Ministers as Spain’s new ambassador to Switzerland.
Celsa Nuño, as The Diplomat reported, will fill the vacancy left in Bern by Victorio Redondo, who was appointed ambassador to Paris.
Spain’s new diplomatic representative in the Swiss Confederation held the post of under-secretary of Foreign Affairs for just over a year, when Arancha González Laya headed the ministerial department. After the arrival of José Manuel Albares at the Palace of Santa Cruz, she was dismissed and moved to the General Inspectorate of Services.
Previously, Celsa Nuño was ambassador to Jamaica and Spanish consul general in Rabat, Caracas and Rio de Janeiro. She has also been posted to Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, South Africa, the Dominican Republic and Argentina. In Madrid, she was an advisor in the Cabinet of the First Vice-President of the Government and head of the Legal Affairs Department in the Directorate General for Legal and Consular Affairs.
Celsa Nuño’s appointment as ambassador to Switzerland was expected, as was that of two other diplomats who have already been granted the green light to become ambassadors to South Africa and Nigeria: Raimundo Robredo and Juan Sell, respectively. In diplomatic circles, it is causing some surprise that neither of them has yet been appointed by the Council of Ministers, despite the fact that the diplomatic clearance was received several weeks ago.
On the other hand, Felipe de la Morena, who was initially going to be ambassador to South Africa until Minister Albares decided to swap places with Raimundo Robredo, for whom the Thai authorities had been asked to give the go-ahead, is still awaiting acceptance by Thailand.
