Casa África convenes 10th Meeting of Special Envoys for the Sahel

The 10th Meeting of Special Envoys for the Sahel: lessons learned from international cooperation and proposals for the future in the Sahel will take place at Casa África on the 2nd and 3rd of December.

The international community is strongly committed to the countries of the region to ensure their stability and development. Two countries, Mali and Chad, are engaged in democratic transition processes. In Mali, the process implies that the political actors concerned ensure inclusive and peaceful transitions and that clear roadmaps lead as quickly as possible to free, transparent and fair elections. Mali must also accelerate the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement. Moreover, the Sahel Coalition is still waiting for the time to hold its next summit following the N’Djamena Declaration, the driving force behind the “civil and political momentum”.

The EU Special Representative for the Sahel, Emanuela Claudia Del Re, took up her duties in July 2021. She has travelled to several countries in the region since her appointment to get closer to the reality on the ground and the populations, and has proposed to organise this meeting of Special Representatives and Envoys which will have two parts open to the public: 2 December at 3 p.m., welcoming remarks by José Segura, Casa África’s Director General; Ángel Víctor Torres, President of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, and Augusto Hidalgo, Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. On the 3rd, at 5.30 p.m., the meeting will be closed by Emanuela Del Re, the European Union’s representative for the Sahel, and José Manuel Albares, Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
