The Fundación Carlos de Amberes, together with the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Czech Centre, the Real Instituto Elcano and the Knihovna Václav Havel Library, is organising the conference Václav Havel and his legacy on 23 November at 10 am.
The first Czech president, Václav Havel, was at the centre of one of the key moments in the history of the Czech Republic. On the tenth anniversary of his death, we remember his figure with a series of events including this conference with prominent personalities from the Spanish and Czech spheres. After welcoming remarks by Miguel Ángel Aguilar, President of the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, the conference will focus on The future of democracy in Europe in the context of globalisation, with Ana Palacio, former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs; Michael Žantovský, former spokesperson and advisor, author of the biography of V. Havel, and José Ignacio Torreblanca, Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations. The moderator will be Rocío Martínez-Sampere, Director of the Fundación Felipe González. This will be followed by a panel discussion on Václav Havel and his role in democratic change, with Martin C. Putna, historian, protagonist of the student movement in Nov. 1989; Sarah Lemmen, researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid, and Mira Milosevich-Juaristi, senior researcher at the Real Instituto Elcano, moderated by Charles Powell, director of the Real Instituto Elcano.
