The series of talks ‘Cultural links between Spain and Paraguay’ kicked off last Thursday on the YouTube channel of the Juan de Salazar Cultural Centre of Spain (CCEJS), with a lecture by Eduardo Tamayo Belda, historian and master in political science from the National University of Asunción.
The series, organised by the Cultural Centre, together with the Autonomous University of Madrid, was opened by the Paraguayan Ambassador to Spain, Ricardo Scavone Yegros, who stressed that “contrary to what one might think, Paraguay’s independence did not imply a rupture in terms of the influence of Spanish cultural manifestations in our country”.
The opening session was also addressed by the Spanish Ambassador to Paraguay, Carmen Castiella Ruiz de Velasco, and the Director of the Department of Contemporary History at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Juan Pan-Montojo.
Afterwards, Eduardo Tamayo Belda, Spanish historian and political scientist, gave the first of the talks, on the subject of ‘Research on relations between Spain and Paraguay: a brief state of the question’.
The series will continue on Thursday 4 November, with presentations by Rafael Barrett, a “young man of ’98” in Asunción and Josefina Plá, oteadora de horizontes, by Francisco Corral Sánchez-Cabezudo and Ángeles Mateo del Pino, respectively. Milda Rivarola will moderate this session.
On Thursday 18 November, Bernardo Neri Farina will moderate the third talk, in which José Vicente Peiró Barco will present Bermejo, Oca del Valle and Paraguayan theatre, and Mar Langa Pizarro will give a dissertation on Josefina Plá as an inspiration for Paraguayan women writers.
On the first Thursday of December, Pilar Cagiao Vila will talk about her studies on Matías Alonso Criado and transnational diplomacy, while Herib Caballero Campos will pay tribute to Gabriela Dalla Corte and her historical studies on the Paraguayan Chaco. Liliana Brezzo will be in charge of the presentation and comments on both lectures.
The series will end on Thursday 16 December with Eva Morales Raya, Viriato Díaz Pérez, cultural mediator between Spain and Paraguay, and Philip Duncan Webb, Los inmigrantes españoles en el Paraguay desde los tiempos de Carlos Antonio López hasta inicios del siglo XX, moderated by Claudio Fuentes Armadans.
