The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, has dismissed the country’s ambassador to Spain, Claudio Julio de la Puente Ribeyro, who was appointed to the post in January 2019 by the previous Peruvian head of state, Martín Vizcarra.

De la Puente has resigned from his functions and will leave the diplomatic representation, which will remain in the hands of a Chargé d’Affaires until a new ambassador is appointed.

A month ago it became known that the first foreign minister appointed by Castillo, Héctor Bejar, an 85-year-old sociologist and former guerrilla fighter, wanted to appoint Rodrigo Montoya, a 78-year-old anthropologist who is not a member of the diplomatic corps, as ambassador to Madrid.

However, Béjar was dismissed by Castillo after he claimed that the Maoist terrorist group Sendero Luminoso was the work of the Peruvian Navy and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and his plans to appoint ambassadors fell through.

The name of the person chosen by Castillo and his current foreign minister, Óscar Maúrtua, to take charge of the embassy in Spain has not yet been revealed.
