The European Parliament on Wednesday called for an investigation into the links between Catalan independentist and Russian intelligence, following reports published in the US daily “The New York Times”.
A majority of MEPs backed an amendment tabled by the Social Democrat group calling for an investigation into the Kremlin’s links with Catalan independence. The PP, PSOE, Ciudadanos and Vox MEPs were in favour, while the representatives of Junts, ERC, PNV and Unidas Podemos rejected the amendment, reports Europa Press.
The Greens abstained en bloc. “Recent revelations about close and regular contacts between Russian officials, including members of the security service, and representatives of a group of Catalan secessionists in Spain require a thorough investigation,” says the text, which was approved by 462 MEPs.
