The Spanish Navy patrol vessel ‘Vigía’, which has been in the Gulf of Guinea since June as part of the so-called ‘African Deployment’, arrived yesterday at the port of Luanda, where it will remain until the 12th.
Since it began its mission, the ‘Vigia’ has called at Mauritania, Cape Verde, Ghana, Nigeria and the Republic of Congo and has participated in the activities belonging to the concept of ‘Coordinated Maritime Presences’ of the European Union, strengthening capabilities against actions that may challenge maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The Spanish patrol vessel’s stay in the various ports is used to contribute to the development of the coastal states’ capabilities.
During its stay in Luanda, various activities are planned, in coordination with the Spanish Embassy in Angola, which include contacts with the Navy of that country, as well as with local organisations responsible for the fight against illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea.
According to the Navy, joint cooperation exercises are planned with the Angolan Navy to reinforce maritime security aspects, knowledge of the maritime environment and first aid medical assistance, among other activities.
