The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Arancha González Laya, highlighted on Wednesday Spain’s support for the work of the Venice Commission “in strengthening democracy, the rule of law and human rights”, according to a note from her department.
The minister was visited by the President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law of the Council of Europe (Venice Commission), Gianni Buquicchio, who also met with the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and for Latin America and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach.
The note notes that the visit was “a recognition of the growing importance of the work of the Venice Commission, confirmation of Spain’s cooperation with it and of Spain’s support for the Commission’s efforts to enhance its outreach to the Ibero-American system”.
The visit had to be postponed last year because of travel restrictions due to the pandemic.
