The Diplomat
The Vox Parliamentary Group has presented a request for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, to appear before the Congress of Deputies to explain the inclusion of “diversity” among the principles for access to the Diplomatic Career.
The request is signed by Vox’s deputy spokesperson, Macarena Olona; and by the spokesperson in the Foreign Affairs Committee, Alberto Asarta. The deputies request that González Laya attends the aforementioned committee to “report on the inclusion, in the draft of the Regulations of the Diplomatic Career, of the concept of ‘diversity’ among the principles for access to it”.
The latest draft of the Regulations of the Diplomatic Career submitted to a public hearing included “diversity” among the guiding principles of this text, but also among those that must be taken into account, along with equality, merit and ability, in order to gain access to the Diplomatic Career.
The Board of Directors of the Association of Spanish Diplomats (ADE), which represents 65% of the members of the career, presented a series of observations on the draft, indicating that it agreed with the inclusion of the concept of “diversity” as a “guiding principle” in the preamble of the Regulation, but disagreed with its inclusion in the articles, as it considered that it could generate confusion and legal uncertainty.
On the other hand, the platform “Exterior es diverso”, which brings together diplomats and other Foreign Service officials from the LGTBI community, defends the inclusion of the principle of “diversity”, because it believes that “the diplomatic career should reflect the diversity and plurality of Spanish society”.
