The Asociación Empresarial Hispano-Irlandesa (SIBN), in conjunction with the Embassy of Ireland in Spain, is hosting Department of Foreign Affairs Political Director Sonja Hyland on Thursday 22 April at 17.30 for a discussion on UNSC membership, what it means for Ireland and what the key objectives are for Ireland’s mandate on the council.
Support for the United Nations is a cornerstone of Irish foreign policy and on 1 January 2021 Ireland took its seat as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2021-2022. However, in practice, what does this mean for Ireland and what is the value of UNSC membership? Sonja Hyland is a career diplomat, who prior to taking up her role as Political Director at the Department of Foreign Affairs in August 2019, served as Ireland’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union. She has previously been Ambassador of Ireland to Mexico, as well as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ireland to Spain.
