The Diplomat
Their Majesties the King and Queen received yesterday in audience, at the Zarzuela Palace, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Spain, Hugh Elliott, to personally express their condolences on the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away on the 9th, at the age of 99.
After the audience, the ambassador posted a message on his Twitter account in which he thanked Their Majesties the King and Queen for the “affectionate words in memory of the Duke of Edinburgh”, which he conveyed during the meeting, “on behalf of the British people”.
On the 9th, when the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II’s husband was announced, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia sent a telegram to the British sovereign. In it they addressed the Queen as “dear Aunt Lilibet”, the affectionate nickname with which the members of the British royal family call her, and conveyed their “deep sadness” at the death of “our dear Uncle Philip”.
