The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, has conferred the Encomienda de la Orden de Isabel la Católica on the Director of the European Commission Representation in Spain, Francisco Fonseca Morillo, who will shortly be leaving his post.
On his Twitter account, González-Barba thanked Francisco Fonseca for “his long career in the service of the European Union and, therefore, of Spain”.
Fonseca will be relieved of his post on 1 April by María de los Ángeles Benítez Salas, who has worked for the European Commission for the past 35 years.
The until now director of the EU representation in Madrid held the post since September 2018, a time in which she carried out extensive work in contact with the different sectors of Spanish society.
Fonseca, who began working at the European Commission in 1986, was already director of its Office in Spain between 2009 and 2015, when he returned to Brussels, having been appointed deputy director general of the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers. He teaches International Public and European Law at the Universities of Valladolid and CEU-San Pablo.
