Cycle of conferences at Casa Árabe on what Shariah is
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On 16 and 17 March, Casa Árabe is offering the first (double) session of the series it is dedicating to Sharia. The lectures will be given by Delfina Serrano Ruano, a researcher at the CSIC, and will take place in person in Cordoba (attendance is subject to prior registration), and will be broadcast live on the Diplomatic Centre’s social media channels.

These two sessions will provide a brief chronological overview of the history of the shari`a (or “sharia”) from the early days of Islam and the preaching of the Prophet Muhammad to the present day. The meaning of basic concepts such as sacred law (shari`a), fiqh (jurisprudence), siyasa shar`iyya (good governance); qanun or governmental law and codified law, madhhab (legal school), cadi, mufti, fetua, etc. will be clarified. At the same time, intellectual phases and developments will be identified which, without having represented a drastic break with the past, have been decisive in the evolution of the concept and role of the shari`a throughout the history of Islamic societies. Delfina Serrano Ruano is a specialist in Arabic and Islamic Studies and a Senior Scientist at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East of the CSIC. To attend this event in person, prior registration is required by clicking on the following links for the session on 16 March and for the registration on 17 March.
