Malta’s former ambassador to Spain until September 2018, Mark Anthony Micallef, died on Tuesday at the age of 70 after a short illness, the Times of Malta reports.

Micallef headed the Maltese Embassy in Madrid for five years, until he was relieved by Vani Xuereb, after being appointed his country’s ambassador to Portugal. Prior to that, he was Malta’s ambassador to the United States from 1996 to 1998.

A lawyer by profession, he was a member of the board of the Maltese Heritage Foundation for several years and was an authority on Maltese art and heritage. He was the author of the book: “The Politics of Art”.
