The Italian Ambassador to Spain, Riccardo Guariglia, spoke yesterday at the inaugural session of the International Congress organised by the National University for Distance Education (UNED) on the theme “Spain, Portugal, Italy: ideology, revolution and change, 1820-1823”.
The event, dedicated to the memory of the historian Joaquim Veríssimo Serrao, who was for more than thirty years president of the Portuguese Academy of History and who recently passed away, was attended by the rector of the University, Ricardo Mairal Usón, and the Portuguese ambassador, Joao Mira-Gomes.
In his speech, the Italian ambassador stressed, among other things, that “if the historical and cultural relations between Italy, Spain and Portugal are well known since the times of ancient Rome, today it is clear that the friendship and closeness between the three countries is a fundamental driving force to help promote a qualitative leap in European integration. The subject of the study presented here, although focused on a limited historical period, is therefore highly topical”.
The conference, which will last until tomorrow and will be followed online by numerous university students from the three countries, will feature speakers from Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian and Italian universities. Among the Italian universities taking part are the University of Milan, the University of Messina and the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio.
